FoodSaver Bags Won't Seal? Common Causes & How to Fix It

If your FoodSaver isn't producing a clean seal, the machine itself is usually fine — the problem is almost always the bag or the technique. Unlike a chamber vacuum sealer, a FoodSaver is an external suction machine: it clamps onto the open end of the bag and pulls air out through a nozzle before sealing the top closed. That process is sensitive to bag style, moisture, and how the bag is loaded, which is why most "my FoodSaver won't seal" problems have a quick fix.

Start by identifying what kind of failure you're seeing

Not every sealing problem has the same cause. Before troubleshooting, figure out which of these you're actually dealing with:

  • No seal forms at all — the machine runs its cycle but the bag opening stays loose.
  • The seal looks thin, wrinkled, or incomplete — part of the seal line is closed, part isn't.
  • The bag seals but reopens later — especially after freezing or a few days in the fridge.
  • The machine won't start a cycle or loses suction partway through — this points to the machine itself rather than the bag.

The first three are almost always bag- or technique-related. Here's what to check for each.

You're using the wrong bag style

FoodSaver and other external suction machines need embossed (channeled) bags — a textured, cross-hatch pattern pressed into the plastic that gives air a path to escape through as it's being pulled out. A smooth bag made for a chamber vacuum sealer won't seal properly on a FoodSaver, because there's no channel for the air to travel through as the seal closes. Not enough headspace at the top of the bag

If food or liquid is sitting in the area the machine is trying to seal, it can't form a clean seal line. Leave 2–3 inches of empty, flat bag above the food before starting the seal cycle — this gives the sealer clean plastic to work with instead of trying to seal through food debris.

Moisture, grease, or crumbs at the seal line

This is one of the most common causes of a weak or incomplete seal. Any moisture, grease, or food particles sitting in the seal area will keep the two layers of plastic from fusing together properly. Wipe the top inch of the bag dry and clean before sealing — for wet items, freezing them for 30-60 minutes first (until firm) makes this much easier to control.

Wrinkles in the bag opening

A wrinkle running through the seal line creates a tiny gap the seal can't close. Before sealing, flatten and smooth the top edge of the bag with your fingers, keeping it straight and taut where it enters the machine.

Bag reseals but reopens after freezing

If a seal looks fine right after sealing but pulls apart in the freezer, the bag material itself may not be rated for freezer temperatures, or the original seal was borderline to begin with (check for the causes above). Wrong bag size for what you're sealing

If it's the machine, not the bag

If you've ruled out the bag and technique and the machine still won't build suction or hold a seal, the FoodSaver's own gasket or sealing strip may be worn — those are parts of the machine itself, not something Vac and Pac stocks, so check FoodSaver's own replacement parts or documentation for that fix.

  • No seal forms at all: confirm you're using an embossed bag, not a smooth chamber-style bag.
  • Seal is thin, wrinkled, or incomplete: check for moisture/grease at the seal line and smooth out wrinkles before sealing.
