Berkel Vacuum Sealer Won't Seal or Losing Vacuum: Common Causes & Fixes
A Berkel chamber vacuum sealer that won't hold a seal — or has lost vacuum strength — is usually a worn part, not a machine that needs replacing. Berkel's chamber lineup (Model 350/350D, 420A, 550A, 600A, and 620A) was originally built by Sipromac, and Berkel still sells many of the same parts under that name, so this guide applies whether your machine's nameplate says Berkel or Sipromac.
Start by narrowing down where the problem is
A chamber sealer has to do three things correctly to produce a good seal: the lid has to close and lock under pressure, the seal bar has to press evenly against the bag, and the control system has to run the cycle correctly. A weak or missing seal can come from any of these — the fix depends on which one is actually failing.
Lid won't stay closed, or feels weak
If the lid doesn't hold down firmly under vacuum, the lid spring is the most common cause — it wears out over repeated open/close cycles. The lid spring is model-specific: Model 350 & 350D, Model 420A, and Model 600A & 620A each use a different spring, so confirm your model before ordering.
Seal looks weak, wrinkled, or inconsistent
If the lid closes and locks fine but the seal itself is uneven, the seal wire is the likely culprit — it's a wear item that thins and stretches with regular use. Berkel/Sipromac machines use several seal wire profiles depending on the model and bag type: 2.5mm flat standard, 2.5mm concave, 8mm double seal, and the T-profile cut-off wire used alongside a flat or concave wire. Also check the striker bar seal rubber, which supports the seal from the opposite side of the bar and wears alongside the wire.
Vacuum doesn't hold, or seal pressure feels uneven
Model 420A, 550A, 600A, and 620A machines use a seal bar airbag (bladder) to press the bar down evenly during the seal cycle. If pressure feels uneven across the bar, or the seal is fine in some spots and weak in others, check the airbag for your model: 420A or 550A/600A/620A. These are not interchangeable between models.
Control panel or programming issues
If the machine won't start a cycle, loses its programs, or the keypad is unresponsive, the issue is more likely electronic than mechanical. Vac and Pac stocks the MC-30 and MC-40 control boards (including rebuilt options), the KB-30 and KB-40 keyboards, the MC-30 memory battery (a common fix for a machine that keeps losing its saved programs), and the MC-30 control cable.
Other components worth checking
A worn control box gasket can let moisture into the electronics compartment over time, and the D-profile lid gasket is worth checking if the lid seats unevenly against the chamber. On Model 350/350D, a worn seal bar assembly itself can also be the root cause rather than just the wire or rubber on it.

Often it's the memory battery rather than the full control board. Replacing the MC-30 memory battery is a lower-cost fix worth trying before replacing the whole board.
Can I use a seal wire from another brand on my Berkel machine?
No. Berkel/Sipromac seal wire profiles are specific to these machines and aren't the same as Bizerba, Henkovac, or Promarks seal wire.
